FBI Stings in WWW?
I'm considering buying products on the WWW that are considered illegal in some states. Can my Google searches and activity with known over-seas websites be tracked or snagged in some kind of FBI net? Does Google cooperate with the FBI on such things?

Probably some detectives during down time surf the web and webcrawler programs may pick up certain word groupings but mostly its the same as off the web. Wrong place, wrong time equals busted, oh well.

Any activity you undertake on your computer can be traced and recovered even if you try to erase it so if the Cops do come and take your computer all the incriminating crap on there can potentially be used against you. Surf smart.

haha you guys will definitely not like my website..
The truth is (and this coming from a computer science major) YES, your activity can be traced and recovered. However you have to be realistic! IF you go buying illegal stuff on the net, then YES it can be tracked back to you because it's a sale of goods and you most likely gave away personal info such as payment info or an address. If you want to get more technical, your browser saved the page in your history, your router has a log of the IP addresses you visit, your ISP also has a similar log, and the server for the website you visited also has a log of your IP address including which pages you visited..
Now unless you're doing something obviously wrong such as child pornography, they will not go after you. They just don't have the resources nor the time to get the required subpoenas, warrants, etc..
An example would be ordering seeds to the US. They just don't have the time to go after each individual that orders seeds, but it will likely get caught at customs. They are more likely to go after the dealer, or the website which shipped those illegal products to the US

After heavy use of your hard drive, you'll find that files and data cannot be recovered, even with the best forensic software out there (ie- TCT, etc). I can't stress the word HEAVY because you really have to be running a server of some sort in order to get the kind of activity I'm talking about. Also, the newer hard drives out there are solid state drives (SSD) and Flash, which are smaller than your standard hard disk drives which spin and use a track w/ an arm to retrieve data. The smaller the hard drive, the more likely you will have met the heavy usage requirement to render deleted files un-recoverable..

use a public site
go to the library or a coffee house and use the computer then they may know a web address was contacted but they would have a hell of a time since anyone with a library card could have contacted a web address
