Default FREE Cannabis: Yes, There's an App for That

Here are two articles about the new FREE iPhone app called Cannabis:

This should definitely hit home in San Francisco, home to marijuana dispensaries called the Vapor Room and the Divinity Tree and likely the nest of the largest amount of iPhone users in the nation besides New York.

You may remember way back when in the days of black and white when ANJAG.com and Cannabis Apps released an iPhone application they called, rather ingeniously, Cannabis. If you’re reading this, more you probably cannot recall that far back in the past so let me bring you up to speed.

The application, for $3 on the App Store, would locate places that cannabis users, with doctor’s orders of course, could find medical marijuana. That meant collectives, cooperatives, doctors, clinics and facilities in fourteen states.

And if you have been around San Francisco, you know there are a few of them.

While they haven’t changed the functionally of the Cannabis application, they have made it free for anyone over the age of 17 with an iPhone. Here is what Cheryl Aichele of Medical marijuana Media had to say about the price change:

As patients, we understand the financial burden of living with life-altering medical conditions and we want to help patients access valuable resources for no additional cost.

So there you have it. If this sounds like something you need, the streets of San Francisco are confusing after all, you can head here to snag the app for free.

App Shows Where the Grass Is Greener
    By ROY FURCHGOTT
Just in time for this week’s National Medical Marijuana Week, which is intended to make people aware of the therapeutic benefits of marijuana, comes an app designed to make patients aware of legal marijuana dispensaries.

With the prosaic name “Cannabis,” the app maps the locations of doctors who prescribe, dispensaries, lawyers and advocacy organizations in the 14 states where medical marijuana is legal.

If you are not living in a state with legalized medical marijuana, you will see the location of advocate groups like Norml, and lawyers with experience in marijuana law.

The app also searches for overseas locations that dispense marijuana, like Canada, Australia, Spain and Holland.

The database comes from imedicalcannabis.org, and the Patient ID Center in Oakland, Calif. The app was produced for Ajnag (yes, that is Ganja spelled backwards), which stands for Activists Justifying the Natural Agriculture of Ganja, which describes itself as an online site founded as a “real-time cannabis connection center.”

Although it seems to work well enough for me (at least, as a demonstration — I didn’t follow up with the suggested destinations), some people in early iTunes comments said they found it to be glitchy. The app has a page for cannabis news and a link to the Cannabis wiki page, but the main attraction is the location feature. Destinations that are close by are served up with a map and directions. Results for distant cities show as a list, not a map — the one feature I might call half-baked.
